Domaine René Monnier, Meursault

Founded in 1723, the domaine is now in the hands of the 10th generation, Jean-Louis Bouillot-Monnier and his wife, daughter of the late René Monnier together with Xavier Monnot, a grandson of René Monnier, who seems to be a skilfull winemaker. This is a large domaine by Burgundy standards, totaling 18 ha, 10 of which are white, while eight are red.

Vineyard holdings include Meursault PC Charmes, Puligny-Montrachet PC Folatiéres, Meursault Village in the lieux-dits Les Chevaliéres (largest holding) and Le Limozin, Puligny-Montrachet Village and Bourgogne Blanc. The reds include Beaune PC Cent Vignes and Toussaint, Volany PC Clos des Chênes, Pommard Village Lieux-dit Les Vignots, Santernay in the lieux-dits Commes Dessus and Charmes, Maranges PC La Fussiére and Clos de la Bussiére, Monthélie and Bourgogne rouge.

The domaine aims at ”un style de vins plutôt élégant affichant des tannin délicats”. Low yields and 100% destemming for the reds here. Vinification traditionelle. New barrels make up 25-30%. This is a domaine where you get value for money. Our picks from the cellar have included both whites and reds among which we have preferred Meursault Les Chevaliéres, Volnay Clos des Chênes and Beaune Toussaint.
