Cultural trip to Potsdam and Berlin

Cultural trip to Potsdam and Berlin

From October 19th to October 22nd 2023 Björg, Unnur and I took Frida and Gustav on a cultural and historical
trip to Potsdam and Berlin to extend their knowledge on German culture and history.
On October 19th we were lucky to catch the last ferry, before a rising storm cancelled all ferries between DK and D.

To meet one of Frida’s wishes our first stop was at the Designer Outlet in Berlin. Similarly, a visit to McDonalds was a must for Gustav.
Early next day we visited the house of the Wannsee Conference, where some 15 SS officers met on January 20th 1942 to organize the deportation and extermination of 11 million jews in Europe.
The Liebermann–Villa am Wannsee was our next stop. Max Liebermann lived (1847-1935) and worked in Berlin. From 1910 and onwards he made several famous paintings of his garden bordering the Wannsee.
After visiting the Liebermann-villa we went to Schloss Cecilienhof, where Josef Stalin, Winston Churchill and Harry Truman met in July-August 1945 to organize the occupation and rearrangement of Germany, including rebuilding of Germany. We also stopped at the famous Glienicker Brügge which was destroyed during the war, but reopened in 1949. After the construction of the wall separating West Berlin from East Berlin and DDR only military people and diplomats were allowed to use the bridge, which became famous for the exchange of spys.
A visit was also made to the famous Dutch quarter in Potsdam to enjoy their famous cakes and chocolate.
In Berlin we visited the remains of the famous Wall from 1961 and Topographie des Terrors, placed where the head quarter of SS was located. It illustrates the hate and terror of the nazi regime.
We passed Checkpoint Charlie on our way to the memorial for the six million jews killed by the nazis. Finally, we went to see Brandenburger Tor, the Reichstag and Unter den Linden.

Eating places included KaDeWe, Vietnamese- and Italian restaurants, all decided by Gustav and Frida.
Briefly, we spent some wonderful days with our grandchildren and daughter.
